Creatures, black & white and stripes…back into familiar territory.

At least for a little while.

Colourful me

20111025-114429.jpg

I have dedicated the past few weeks to experimenting with abstract ideas and colours.

Like mentioned already, I needed to move away from the “creatures”, I needed to stretch my creativity in other directions, experiment, get dirty with both ideas and techniques.

The results are a series of very colourful oil paintings of various sizes, some stretched and some not.

I am still unsure of the results and that if this is something I want to take further.

At this point I’m enjoying the process, allowing myself to play with ideas and make mistakes.

Something I don’t allow myself to do enough.

Break of dawn

Many reasons to enjoy my early morning run:

  • Getting my exercise out of the way, so I can concentrate on work.
  • Stimulate the endorphins and improve my mood
  • Experience the first lights of the day…so inspiring!

Studies in black

I have been working on a series of black paintings.

Yes, all completely black.

The inspiration comes from the content of my wardrobe, which consists of mostly black clothes.

The rather difficult task of looking for a specific garment is made easier by the slightly different tones, textures, shininess of the black fabric.

That gave me the idea of exploring the colour through those characteristics.

These are the first 4 of the series. They measure 6×6 inches (15x15cm), oils on linen, my medium of choice at the moment.

The overall plan is to create sixteen of them, to make a square of 4 by 4.

Changing direction

20111007-120502.jpg

My art is changing direction.

It has already changed direction.

After dedicating most of my creative efforts (not all, because I’ve always done different things “on the side”) to the creatures, I’ve felt the need to change and to move on what it feels like, the opposite direction: from very precise, drawing based, figurative art, to shapeless, abstract, colour based one.

What it started as a holiday, it’s turning now into a regular feature of my art.

I’ve packed my bags and moved to the holiday home.

And that’s such a liberating feeling.

On my table

I keep a few sketchbooks that I fill with doodles, scribbles and little creatures, all done in pencil (I don’t often use pencil, preferring pens and markers above everything else).

The fun part is to go back and ink some of this scribbles and creatures – it’s one of my favourite pastimes, a way to relax and unwind while still doing something…I can’t really do nothing.

It’s a curse.
