Piling book - TaniaMetalli.com

I have the same attitude towards books as I have towards projects: I start too many at the same time.

The difference is that with books, at least I tend to finish them.

At the moment I have a pile of books on the coffee table in the living room, another pile on my side table in the bedroom, and a few on my work table.

And don’t let me start on the ones on the Kindle application on my iPhone. (I decided against buying a proper Kindle, I can’t cope with having too many devices, I prefer to have just one that does it all).

I have been devouring the written word.

I have always been an avid reader, but sometimes it gets ridiculous. Like now.

I’m reading about writing, about psychology, art, art criticism, and of course, novels and short stories.

I move from one book to another, wishing that I could read them all at once, while managing to actually absorb and understand what I’m reading. And, worst of all, I can’t stop buying books!

That has always been one of my vices

…If buying too many books can count as a vice. Okay, maybe not a vice, but definitely and addiction.

When I came back from Australia, after living there for 7 years, I had to pay the equivalent of another plan ticket, just to take with me all the books that I had accumulated. And then when I moved to London, I tried not to repeat the same story, and started borrowing them from the local library. But that didn’t last long.

The thing with books is not just about reading

I love books as objects, and I love collecting them. That’s why, as much as I find the all Kindle idea very useful, I will keep buying printed books. As long as they keep getting printed of course.

  • Timothy Brooks’s Vermeer’s hat – A Christmas gift. I have started it, but I find it a bit…random, as these kind of books often are. I’m not sure I’ll ever managed to finish it. But I will try.
  • Hertha Muller’s The Appointment – The bleak -but beautiful written – tale about the everyday life of a woman In Romania, during the regime of Ceausescu. A heavy read indeed.
  • Twyla Tharp’s The Creative Habit – I’ve heard so much about it, it was time to read it. Interesting, but I have already  developed  my own Creative Habit, so nothing new.
  • The Art of the Renaissance – To refresh some knowledge.
  • Peter Carey’s Parrot and Olivier in America – I’ve read a few of Carey’s books and enjoyed them very much. I have started this one, but then stopped. I keep it on the side as a reminder.
